Android Apps of the Week! –July 15, 2012
Welcome to another edition of DroidLessons.com’s “Android Apps of the Week!”. The plan is to compile a list of my favorite apps and share them with you on the Sunday of every week. It will give you plenty of time to try out the apps and then also something to look forward to on a weekly basis. It’s always fun to learn about the latest and greatest apps out there. The Android Market (now known as Google Play) has over 400,000 apps and therefore it’s not always easy finding quality apps via the Android Market. My hope is to save you some time by sharing and informing you of the quality apps that I have found over the many months of using and teaching on the Android platform.
So, without further ado, I present to you this week’s edition of “Android Apps of the Week!”.
From the makers that brought you “Angry Birds” comes their latest creation… Amazing Alex! Amazing Alex is a great new puzzle game that is a lot of fun to play. Every level, players are given a simple objective, like knocking over a pile of books, or getting a bowling ball into a basket. Various obstacles are already in place, and players are provided with a limited toolbox of extras to build a Rube Goldberg-style machine and achieve the objective. The three stars in every level act as secondary objectives, which players can earn by knocking objects into them. Check out the trailer for this game below:
Want to check it out for yourself? Just go to the “Play Store” icon on your phone and click the search button and type in “Amazing Alex”. Install the app and start having some fun! I’ve also included a link to the Android Market Webstore here for those of you that want to install it via the web. [Market Link]
If you want to control your Android smartphone then Power Controls is one of the BEST widget tools to have. It provides widgets that are totally customizable. This allows you to create a customized widget (or widgets) to control all sorts of settings, including the usual Wifi, screen brightness and Bluetooth options, as well as toggles for more exotic options like WiMax and tethering. It’s a simple, clean and well-designed widget with plenty of customization options, and what’s more, it’s offered completely free. If you want a little more control over your set of widgets, it’s definitely worth a look. It contains the following widgets:
* 2G/3G (Shortcut to mobile settings)
* 4G (WiMAX for EVO)
* Data (Renaming APN or toggle APN)
* Stay Awake
* Always ON
* Auto Sync
* Auto Rotate
* AND MORE!

Everyone knows I’m a big fan of Live Wallpapers! I think they make Android phones unique and I’m constantly hunting for new ones to add to my collection. This week I found “Paparland Live Wallpaper” and it’s great! Watch as the fantastic paper cut-out landscape scrolls across your screen! Choose a fixed time of day, or let the sun and moon rise and set according to real world around you.
Give it a try and see how great it looks on your smartphone! In order to activate the wallpaper after installation, you have to go to: Home Screen->Click Menu Button->Wallpapers->Live Wallpapers and then select “Paperland Live Wallpaper”. [Market Link]

Holo Launcher is an awesome replacement home launcher for the Android platform. It is simple, powerful, fast and highly customizable. Based on the Android 4.0.4 ICS (Ice Cream Sandwich) launcher. It’ll make your older Android smartphone look and feel like one of the newer kids on the block. One of the best parts of the Android platform is the highly customizable interface, and Holo Launcher really gives you the ability to update the feel of your Droid. Give it a try!
