Android Apps of the Week! – Nov. 6, 2011
Welcome to another edition of DroidLessons.com’s “Android Apps of the Week!”. The plan is to compile a list of my favorite apps and share them with you on the Sunday of every week. It will give you plenty of time to try out the apps and then also something to look forward to on a weekly basis. It’s always fun to learn about the latest and greatest apps out there. The Android market has over 200,000 apps and therefore it’s not always easy finding quality apps via the Android Market. My hope is to save you some time by sharing and informing you of the quality apps that I have found over the many months of using and teaching on the Android platform.
So, without further ado, I present to you this week’s edition of “Android Apps of the Week!”.
Wind-up Knight
By: Robot Invader
Cost: FREE
Wind-up Knight is an addictive, action-packed, 3D side-scrolling adventure game with some beautiful graphics. The goal is to guide your Wind-up Knight through various levels–over 50 in all–to rescue the Princess from the clutches of the evil Black Knight. Run, jump, roll, and slash your way to victory. Wind-up Knight is the type of challenging game you have been waiting for. The game is a bit on the “high-end” side, so it may not run well on older devices. Check out some of the gameplay footage below to decide whether it is your type of game.
Want to check it out for yourself? Just go to the “Market” icon on your phone and click the search button and type in “Wind-up Knight”. Install the app and start having some fun! I’ve also included a link to the Android Market Webstore here for those of you that want to install it via the web. [Market Link]
BIG Launcher

This app is great for those of you with poor vision who don’t like how small things appear on your phone. BIG Launcher is basically a large home screen replacement app that is optimized for elderly folks and people with bad eye sight. It uses big buttons and large fonts for all the basic functions of the phone – telephone, SMS messages, camera, gallery, SOS button and installed applications. SOS button allows automatic dialing of a pre-defined number or sending an emergency text message with GPS coordinates. Buttons can be customized. More information at www.BIGLauncher.com. Check out the video below for a quick demo of what this app has to offer. [Market Link]

You’ll have an ever-changing wallpaper that will random display pictures from your phone’s camera gallery, Picasa, and Facebook. It’s totally free and ad free! This version shows your photos as a pile of Polaroids. You can upgrade to the paid version if you’d like to unlock more layouts, more effects, and to get more photos more often.
Give it a try and see how great it looks on your smartphone! In order to activate the wallpaper after installation, you have to go to: Home Screen->Click Menu Button->Wallpapers->Live Wallpapers and then select “PhotoWall Live Wallpaper”. [Market Link]
