Android Apps of the Week for Sept. 4, 2011

Android Apps of the Week! – Sept. 4, 2011

Welcome to another edition of’s “Android Apps of the Week!”. The plan is to compile a list of my favorite apps and share them with you on the Sunday of every week. It will give you plenty of time to try out the apps and then also something to look forward to on a weekly basis. It’s always fun to learn about the latest and greatest apps out there. The Android market has over 200,000 apps and therefore it’s not always easy finding quality apps via the Android Market. My hope is to save you some time by sharing and informing you of the quality apps that I have found over the many months of using and teaching on the Android platform.

So, without further ado, I present to you this week’s edition of “Android Apps of the Week!”.

By: Electronic Arts, Inc.
Cost: FREE

TETRIS is one of those classic games that never gets old! And now it’s available on the Android Market for the wonderful price of FREE! In the past, you had to pay upwards of $2.99 or more for this game. But finally EA has decided to release this game for free with the support of ads. The ads can sometimes be kind of annoying… but it allows this game to be available for free so I can’t complain too much. It’s still a really great game and being able to play it with a touchscreen device makes it even more fun.

Just go to your “Market” icon on your phone and click the search button and type in “TETRIS Free”. Install the app and start having some fun! I’ve also included a link to the Android Market Webstore here for those of you that want to install it via the web. [Market Link]

By: Foodspotting
Cost: FREE

Foodspotting provides a different approach to deciding where to find good food in your local area. Instead of showing you reviews for restaurants, it provides you with photos of the food and then you can decide what you feel like eating based on the visuals. Pretty cool idea, right? If you are deciding what to eat, you can…

  •  See the nearest, latest and best foods around you
  •  Find a particular food that you’re craving
  •  Look up a restaurant and see what’s good there

If you want to share recommendations, you can…

  •  Share photos of foods you love & tell others where to find them
  •  Earn expert badges and reputation points for quality contributions

Give it this app a try the next time you can’t decide where you want to go out to eat. You may find your new favorite restaurant.  [Market Link]

Koi Free Live Wallpaper

By: Kittehface Software
Cost: FREE

If you haven’t yet noticed… I’m a huge fan of Live Wallpapers. And one of the best developers for Live Wallpapers is Kittehface Software. Koi Free Live Wallpaper is another great example of their work. This Live Wallpaper creates a virtual Koi Fish pond on your Android desktop. The Koi fish look beautiful swimming around the screen. It’s awesome. No other mobile devices except Android have the ability to  have Live Wallpapers like this. Take advantage of this feature and make your non-Android friends jealous with this beautiful Live Wallpaper. In order to activate the wallpaper after installation, you have to go to: Home Screen->Click Menu Button->Wallpapers->Live Wallpapers and then select “Koi Free Live Wallpaper”. [Market Link]

Do It (Tomorrow)

By: Adylitica, Inc.
Cost: FREE

Do It Tomorrow is a simple “To Do” list type of app for your Android smartphone. But unlike all the other todo type apps this one makes it very easy to push tasks off to tomorrow. Hence the name! And boy is that a great feature for a procastinator!

  • Full virtual todo notebook experience
  • Fastest todo entry
  • Simple interface – just todo and just today and tomorrow
  • Easily check off tasks as completed or delete them altogether
  • Takes advantage of the latest hi-res displays

Why do today what you can put off till tomorrow? Do It Tomorrow may be the todo app for you! [Market Link]

I'm a huge Android fan and also the founder of the DroidLessons website. I started obsessing about the Android platform as soon as I got my HTC EVO phone in mid-2010. Ever since then, I have been obsessed with learning all that I can about the Android OS and sharing that knowledge with my friends and family.
