Almost four full months into the year, the Internet is already abuzz with talk about the best smartphone of 2013. In March, HTC released the One, its flagship successor to the similarly named One X. Despite the ambiguity of its naming conventions and its apparent obsession with el numero uno as per the new First (the first phone to feature Facebook Home), HTC seemingly intends to assault would-be customers with a marketing blitz in the same league as the one Samsung has engineered for its Galaxy line to convince everyone that the One is, well, the one you want. Manufacturing delays have prevented HTC from gaining an advantage early, however, and Samsung is gearing up to release its own flagship phone in the Galaxy S4. Undisputed king of market share among Android smartphones, last year’s S3 will receive a moderate refresh in terms of aesthetics and specifications to bring it into line with other devices available currently, the One included. But how exactly do these two phones stack up? Which one is better? More importantly, which one is better for you?

Do you live in an area or spend time in a building that has poor cellular service? Do you have a small number of minutes for your monthly plan? Do you like cool tricks that may have no practical purpose for you? Then you may be interested in what you are about to read!
In my recent State of the Apps post, I listed Google Voice as the best application from the Communication category in reference to its Internet-based text messaging, call forwarding, and voicemail transcription, archive, and search capabilities. With such a long list of features, you would think Voice has nothing more to offer than what it already does. On the contrary, using Voice in conjunction with another app and after a few settings tweaks offers you access to one more useful feature: the ability to place and receive calls over the Internet for free using your Google Voice number. Cool! But why would I want to do that?

“Have you ever found yourself in need of an Internet connection on your desktop or laptop computer, but your home connection is down or you have no access to public WiFi? If you have an Android phone with an active mobile data connection, 3G or 4G usually, then you can often harness it to connect your other device by way of a feature called tethering.”
Sound familiar? If so, you may have read my recent post about connecting your computer or other device to the Internet using the connection provided by your Android phone via a method called USB tethering. Today we will focus on Wifi tethering, a different method I mentioned in that same post. Before we start though, what is WiFi tethering?

WiFi tethering is different from USB tethering in that you do not need to connect your phone to your other device with a USB cable; instead, your phone sort of acts like a router that broadcasts the signal wirelessly, allowing you to establish a connection like you would when connecting to a dedicated WiFi network. To do so is quite simple and does not require you to root or modify your phone in any other way. All you need to do is download and install one app!

The Nexus 7, from manufacturer Asus in conjunction with Google, is the premier Android tablet, arguably better than any tablet released before it. And with a price point of only $199.99 for the 8GB version and $249.99 for the 16GB version (at least until the 32GB version drops for the rumored price of $249.99), the Nexus 7 is almost an impulse buy. Despite the low price, the tablet is full of value, even if you already have an Android phone with a large screen. How is that possible?

Because the Nexus 7 has a plethora of apps available that function well on phones, but better on tablets. Critics have long argued that competitors like Apple’s iPad have a leg up on Android in terms of the number of tablet-optimized apps available; but as Google encourages app developers to program their apps in such a way that they scale dynamically to fit screen size of any device, many quality apps work well on phones and even better with more screen real estate on tablets. Today I bring you a list of some of those apps. See the best available apps for the Nexus 7 below!
