Mumble! is an app that tries to address an interesting issue: how to let the user know that the message they just received merits a response or is otherwise urgent without having to unlock the phone or read the message to begin with. To do this, it uses the vibration of your phone to let you know how “intense” the message is, and according to the vibration, it can let you know if it’s important or not. Not only that, but it works even if it’s in your pocket, or just sitting on the table, since all it uses is vibration to inform you of the importance of the text. It’s also remarkably easy to set up, and absolutely free, so come with us as we take a look at this app!
Mumble! is free, and you can get it through the Play Store by following this link. Once it’s installed, open the app, and you should see the following screen:
For now, go into the Settings to set up some of the aspects of the app and test it out. Despite being such a specific app, there are quite a number of options to setup, and so you should at least skim through the possibilities. The options you should set up for sure in advance are under the “Basic Settings” section, where you can configure the vibration frequency, intensity and interval. You should set these up according to your average texting usage and preset limits and vibration behavior, as by default the settings are sort of intense and unlimited:
In the bottom of the page, you can also see a Test Area where you can insert a test text and see what sort of vibration response the app will apply, which is useful to test your settings in advance and see if the current options are ideal for you. Above that section are also options to ignore one word messages like “k” or “lol”, and messages that correct a typo with an asterisk:
Once you’re happy with the settings, go back and refer to the “Instructions” section so you can see how to set it up, as by default Mumble! will not be enabled out of the box:
All you have to do is go to the Settings section of your device, then “Accessibility”:
Then, under the “Services” section, tap “Mumble! Basic” and activate it:
And that’s about it, the app should now be active and customize your device’s vibration according to the messages you receive! It’s a very handy way to tell in advance what the context and importance of the text you received is, while still on your pocket or without having to unlock the phone. There’s also a Premium version of the app that adds some extra features like custom filters, smarter vocabulary recognition, and smart sleep mode, where it will ignore text vibration while sleeping unless it’s an emergency. Worth checking out for sure, so if you’re interested in a different way to get your messages, give this app a try!
