Popcorn Time, the popular community-managed free video streaming service, has been around for a long time on the PC. Despite a few setbacks, it still has a solid online presence, with active development and a vast library of titles available for streaming at any time. The service basically acts like a frontend for movie and show downloads, allowing the user to pick what they would like to see right away, with added features like subtitles and synopsis. And today, we’ll show you how to download and install Popcorn Time on your Android device, so you can see your favorite movies and shows on your phone or tablet!
Due to the questionable nature of the service, which allows for possibly copyrighted material to be streamed at will, it is currently not available in the Play Store for download. Luckily, the app is still available through the official website, and you can click this link to download it directly. Just click on the Android version, and the app should start downloading right away. It’s an APK file, so you’ll need to open it to begin the installation process. Once it’s done, open the app, and you will see this screen:
This is the licence agreement of the app, just scroll down and tap the button to proceed:
Once you’re done with that, you’ll be taken to the main interface:
As you can see, there is a wide selection of titles available for streaming, from recent releases to more established classics:
There is also a nice selection of categories so you can find something to watch:
Once you find something you’d like to see, just tap on it, and you’ll be taken to that film’s page:
Here, you can see a brief synopsis of the title, and also have options to choose the subtitles and the quality of the movie:
To start playing, just tap over the play icon, and the download will begin:
Since Popcorn Time uses torrents as its distribution mechanism, it’s not as fast as a direct download, and depending on the title or your connection, it could take a bit longer than expected. However, the movie will start playing once a certain amount has been downloaded, and with any luck, you’ll be able to watch it uninterrupted:
Watching TV shows through the app works in much the same way. Just swipe to the right to see the main menu:
And then pick the “Shows” option to see what shows are available:
The interface for the shows section is pretty similar to the one for movies, but you have added options to navigate through seasons and individual episodes:
Just like before, to start watching, tap the play icon and wait for the episode to be downloaded:
In terms of settings, there is quite a bit of things to tinker with, mostly related to the interface, but also some options regarding the quality of the stream and checking for updates:
Overall, Popcorn Time on Android offers a really nice experience. The app feels modern, sleek, and the selection of films and shows available is quite nice. As always, use the app at your own discretion, since the status of these streaming services is becoming increasingly questionable. But if you’re already a user of Popcorn Time on your PC, you’ll find that the experience on Android is pretty similar, if not better, than the desktop counterpart. Any questions or doubts?
