I’m sure many of you have heard your iPhone friends rave about the great “Siri” feature on their Apple phones. Siri is an “intelligent assistant” which answers questions and takes orders that are given in plain English. There is no denying it… it is a GREAT feature. But you don’t have to be jealous! There are plenty of alternatives to Siri available on Android. And many of them work just as well! Check out the list that I’ve compiled below to see which ones would work best for you.
Note: You need to have “Voice Search” and “TTS library” installed on your phone for many of these apps to work. Most Droid phones have these pre-installed, but if not then search and install them from the Android Market before you try these apps. Links: [Voice Search] [TTS Library]
Iris is one of the top Android apps for “intelligent assistance” and the name “Iris” is actually “Siri” spelled backwards. Something that started out as a tongue-in-cheek reply to iPhone’s Siri, Iris has grown into something much bigger than just being a Siri clone.
Just ask Iris what you want to know. Right from asking how to cope up with your breakup to movie recommendations and questions on science, culture, history, etc.
* Call someone (can you please call Bob)
* text someone (send a text to Bob)
* search nearby (find me a nearby coffee shop)
* play music (play the song rolling in the deep)
* ask movie reviews (should I watch the movie Mission Impossible)
* watch videos (show me a video of cat singing)
* find news (what is the news about SOPA)
* and lots and lots more. Discover for yourself.
Vlingo Virtual Assistant
Vlingo claims to be the best app for Siri-like functionality on your Android device. That, of course, will be up to you to decide. Your Vlingo virtual assistant can take commands such as: “Text John; What’s up?” or “find italian restaurants” or even “update Facebook; Vlingo rocks!”
What can you do by simply speaking to Vlingo?
* Send texts and emails
* Voice dial
* Search the web
* Find local restaurants, shops and other businesses
* Get directions
* Update your status on Facebook or Twitter and check in with foursquare
* Get answers to just about any question
* Buy movie tickets and book hotel rooms
* Open other apps
* More in development all the time
Speaktoit Assistant is a virtual buddy for your Android device that uses natural language technology to answer questions, find information, launch apps and connect you with various web services, such as Google, Facebook, Twitter, Foursquare, Evernote, and many others. A great Siri competitor for Android.
The Assistant works with your smartphone to get maps, search for news and images, look up weather reports, convert currency and measurements, send email, and much more. No need to memorize special commands or complex interfaces – simply speak or type in everyday language and the Assistant will understand and respond with what you need. You can also choose assistant’s appearance whether it be pretty blonde or brunette girl, handsome agent or old professor. The Assistant now also uses new cool voices powered by iSpeech.
